Filipina Grade 12 Student Brought Home P20 Million Cash Prize From International Science Competition.

A Grade 12 student at Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus located in Leyte brought home a shivering amount of PHP 20 million after she won the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, an international science competition.

 According to ABS-CBN News, 18-year-old named Hillary Diane Andales wanted to prove people wrong about the misconception that most students are bad at physics.

With this in mind, she made a simple explanation of a certain concept as possible. She said:

 “We think na ‘yung physics is all about equations. No, physics is about everything and it matters to everyone.”

There were about 178 participating countries participated in the science competition with a total of 11,000 entries. Fortunately, Andales won the competition which made her received a prize money that amounted to $400,000 or around PHP 20 million.

Reports said that $100,000 of the cash prize would be used to buy equipment for their school laboratory, which would all be named after her.

Meanwhile, $50,000 of the amount would be given to her teacher and $250,000 would be devoted to her college scholarship in the future.

She shared that the road to success was not easy for her. In 2016, she did her first entry to the competition. She was included among the Top 6 finalist, however, she didn't win.

Having a determination and hope, she motivated herself to join the competition once again. Andales said that he is hoping the government would actively support the field of science.

In addition, Abdales is also running for valedictorian honors and wanted to serve as in inspiration to other students so that they may gain interest in physics as well.
According to her, one of her goals would be to create a television science program in the future, like ABS-CBN’s “Sineskwela.”
